Molly’s ‘Dreams’ Come True

Indian Dreams Trading Post, a local
retail business in Tumalo, Oregon, began as a ‘dream’ for Molly
Kubista. Being Native American, of the Samish and Cree Nations, she
learned at a young age some of the traditional Indian beadwork from
her older sister. The store features Molly’s handiwork in the form of
handbags, jewelry, moccasins and clothing she beaded using designs
from the 18th and 19th century.
While working for an artist friend who
had a scrimshaw business, Molly had started selling her beadwork. As a
couple, Eugene and Molly were looking for financial independence and
soon decided to open their own business. The demand for her artistic
talent has opened up internationally by using the Internet and Molly
now sells to countries like France, Italy, Czechoslovakia and Japan.
She has won numerous awards with her beadwork, selling at an average
of 30 shows and powwows a year.
Molly fell in love with, and later
married, her childhood sweetheart Eugene. Together they have built a
unique business that reflects their lifestyle of harmony and balance.
The store not only features Molly’s beadwork, but also carries a
variety of Western furniture, rugs, gift items and much more. Eugene
is the Internet genius in charge of locating sources of beads for the
store and negotiating the orders. He orders the beads by the pound and
then sorts them by hand into packets by size, color and shape. There
are over 1200 different colors available and by using the Internet, he
can place orders with foreign exporters.
The Kubista’s balance their life out
based on principles found in the bible and feels their success comes
from this balance. A visit to Indian Dreams is well worth the trip.
