Fishing at Wallowa

Looks are deceiving.
The outward appearance of a summertime snow pack in the Wallowa Mountain
for the last month is an apparent deception. Many of the peaks visible
from the Wallowa Valley appear to have little remaining snow, but river
levels have held consistently at or above average flows during June,
indicating that a substantial snow pack remains in the interior of the
range.
Early in June steady
rains maintained stream flows near average levels, but when
precipitation eased off mid-month the expected drop in river levels
didn't follow as the weather warmed and snow melt picked up the slack,
keeping stream flows near the levels from earlier in June.
This week at the
beginning of July all of the streams draining from the Wallowa Mountains
have above-average flows, with the exception of the Wallowa River above
the Lostine River where a portion of that flow is regulated by a dam.
The moderately high
flows during June proved to be only minor problems for anglers. Water
clarity was consistently good during the month and insect hatches
predictably robust. Golden stonefly and salmonfly hatches proceeded up
the Grande Ronde and Wallowa rivers on schedule and gave anglers good
dry-fly fishing during the month, complimenting the vigorous mayfly and
caddis hatches that occur throughout the season.
The Grande Ronde
River flow this week is above 4,000 cfs, slightly more than average for
early July, but at a fishable level. There has been little trout fishing
pressure, except for rafting traffic from Minam, but lower on the river
in Washington small mouth bass fishing is getting the attention of some
of the local anglers. These reports are from guys using spinning
outfits, but the fishing is in shallow water that is suitable for fly
fishing.
Upstream in the
system the Wallowa River and the area near Rondowa are in the middle and
latter stages of the stonefly hatch, which is giving anglers excellent
dry-fly fishing opportunities for many eager trout measuring into the
teens. Mornings of the Wallowa River are most productive with subsurface
nymphs, but afternoons and evenings give anglers fast action at the
surface with adult stonefly patterns, along with emerging mayfly
patterns.
The water level in
the Wallowa River is slightly above average. The Wallowa River above the
Lostine River is below average, but the Lostine River is about 60
percent above average and Bear Creek is about 10 percent above average,
giving the Wallowa a slightly higher-than-average flow in the canyon and
putting the water in the grass and willows in many stretches of the
river, but there are still plenty of open banks for wade fishing.
Wallowa Lake fishing
continues at its expected good rate. The catch
regularly includes
trout up to 18 inches, says Gina Barstad at Wallowa Lake Marina. Barstad
says the best fishing seems to be still fishing at the mouth of the
river and at the dam and trolling along the west shore and near the dam.
Kokanee fishing has slowed this week with fewer and smaller bluebacks
coming to hand.
Runoff from the
upper Wallowa River exceeds the draw down for irrigation and the water
level in the lake rose about a foot last week.
