Big Hunts, Small Moments

My
greatest hunting experiences haven’t always been associated with
success. Things typically happen while just being in wild places. For
some a wild place might mean standing behind the safety of a fence on a
well beaten path reading a government provided sign. For me I must touch
nature, sitting on a log still enough for a squirrel to climb my leg is
more exhilarating than looking out at Niagara Falls from a car window.
Last year while sitting in a tree stand peacefully watching a hawk that
was watching me, suddenly he spread his wings and took flight straight
in my direction. I remained calm until he went into dive bomb mode
straight for my head. Only then did I react like someone pitched a
snowball at me from close range. This alarmed and confused the bird
causing him to put on his wing breaks stopping inches from my hat, he
then flew in circles around the tree I was in and flew away. Catching my
breath after seeing those razor claws so close and intended for me, I
began to think, what was that all about? Only then remembering the fur
hat on my head and realized he was after that tree climbing rabbit.
A
few years ago while at bow hunting camp in the Ochoco’s my brother in
law Jason became restless and wanted to peak over every hill for miles.
He took six rolls of orange tape and a large piece of plastic carefully
rolled and tied like a fanny pack, with no compass he followed the
setting sun while tying the tape every few feet. I even tried following
his orange brick road but gave up. He placed his long sheet of plastic
on the rocky ground, laying on one end rolled himself like a tortilla in
his plastic blanket for a long night. At about eleven o’clock he heard a
sniffing sound and the plastic around his back being shoved by a big
black nose, of course his heart began racing knowing a bear was there
and I wasn’t there to protect him, that’s what I told him anyway. The
bear eventually lost interest and wandered off looking for a more
worthwhile meal. Sparing you any more details, never throw rocks at a
bull moose, they don’t like that!
