Law Prohibits Political Signs on State Highway Right
– of – Way
With elections approaching, the Oregon Department of Transportation
is reminding campaign workers that signs may not be posted on state
highway right-of-way and there are restrictions for signs on private
property that are visible from state highways.
Political signs placed on state highway right-of-way will be
removed without notice. The signs are picked up during routine
maintenance operations unless the signs pose a hazard to the driving
public, then the signs are picked up immediately.
The signs are held at local ODOT maintenance offices for 30 days.
Signs are prohibited on trees, utility poles, fence posts and natural
features within highway right-of-way. They also are prohibited within
view of a designated scenic area.
The width of state highway right-of-way can vary considerably
depending on the specific location. “If you’re uncertain whether
you’re placing a sign on private property or highway right-of-way,
check with our local ODOT office,” said ODOT Region 4 Public
Information Representative Dan Knoll.
Temporary political signs are allowed on private property within
view of state highways with the following restrictions:
New signs are limited to 12 square feet;
No flashing or intermittent lights, animated or moving parts are
allowed;
Signs must not imitate an official highway sign or device;
